How do they work? Well it is a big secret, however the principle is quite simple.

  • Each link to your website has a value, and all these values are added up to determine your ranking.
  • The value of each link is determined by a secret combination of the following:
    • The relevance of the page your link is on to the search
    • The overall value of the website your link is on
    • The relevance of the page your link links to
    • The actual content of the link
    • Etc

Black Hat techniques involve trying to trick search engines into thinking links are more relevant and valuable than they are, in order to boost rankings.

White Hat techniques, involve trying to do the same, but avoid direct trickery or cheating.

Sites using Black Hat techniques will, if found, out get black listed on Search Engines and Google is well known for doing so. White Hat techniques are believed to be safe and valid by those promoting them, but are in effect trying to do the same thing. They are still trying to manipulate search engines.
