Internet Marketing Mistakes
I looked at other pay per click advertising and set up accounts with Microsoft's Overture, which then changed names and so on. Although I got some business from this, I seemed to be charged a lot more than on Google. My budget, keywords etc were similar, as was the competition, but the actual hits on my site did not compare well with what I was being charged. It was also cumbersome to use, so I decided not to bother, since the up lift in business was negligible compared to the cost and effort required.
With £180 pcm in my pocket to increase my business I was confident I could bring in more business through other channels and I tried the following with little or no success:-
- Advert in Thomson Local and Yellow pages
- Online ads in Thomson and Yell
I spent around £2,000 in the next few months and probably in the time the adverts were live I got around 20 pieces of business from it, but numerous calls from people trying to sell me marketing and advertising solutions! I'm sure they work for some people but not in my case.
I also tried a motorway-side advert opposite Ikea in Warrington, which came down after a month and after I received a good ticking off from the local council. This was an expensive mistake. I only received on phone call from someone looking for work!
Now, as soon as you start to promote your website or register your business, you will be bombarded by people selling you advertising. Mainly on the Internet, but also business cards on boards in supermarkets, calendars, pads - you name it! They usually cost anything from £30 - £100 and sometimes a lot more. Mark my words, get rid of them quickly and don't waste your time.
A good stock answer is, "I have spent my marketing budget for the next 6 months and will not be spending anymore." Repeat it if necessary, they soon go.
So what else did I do that worked?
